Off to The Opera - A Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Mary Poppins Opening Night

May 02, 2017

I have a lot of blog posts that was supposed to come in first but this cannot wait!

What a wonderful night. I had a chance to watch Mary Poppin's Opening night at the Dubai Opera and it was indeed supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!!

Mary Poppins is one of those classic Disney movies that I grew up with so when I was invited to watch it, I of course immediately said yes! (Special thanks to my good friend Alwee who invited us to watch the musical!)

Now I'm no theatre critic, and I've only watched the movie and haven't read the original P. L. Travers book so my basis is the 1964 movie version. Therefore, please be advised that my comparisons are based on the movie so don't kill me! 😂

The musical was no doubt wonderful and the production is amazing! The stage design is out of this world while the music is beautiful. Zizi Strallen has embodied the charming and cheerful characterisation of Mary Poppins and Matt Lee is an outstanding dancer and a fun Bert! The Banks children are so incredibly talented and Neil Robert's Mr. Banks is almost too close to the movie version.

Although, the musical is very different from the original movie. The characters has pretty much kept their personalities, except for Mrs. Banks.

Mrs. Banks (Kara Lane) in this musical is much more I would say, domesticated rather than the strong women's activist in the movie. The Mrs. Bank's musical character is probably a direct characterisation of one particular person in the Saving Mr. Banks movie (you have to watch it for yourself, I'm not going to spoil! lol) or the original book maybe. I do actually like the change and she eventually becomes more like the 1964 movie version by the end.

There were scenes and songs though that was cut in the musical which I would have loved to see especially the "Let's Go Fly a Kite" scene headed by Mr. Banks and sad not to see Uncle Albert! That would have been more fun!

I'm happy though that they kept the bag scene and added the lovely "Practically Perfect in Every Way" song! The new scenes, characters and music fits well in the musical and had created a new fantastic story on its own.

Suit and Tie: Zara

It's the opening night so of course I decided to wear something classy and dapper. I was so inspired by the bankers costumes in the movie so I whipped up something similar.

I was finally able to find a Windowpane patterned suit (Zara)! Finally! After years of failing and crying over it I was able to get one and it was worth the wait. The color suits well with the white shirt and light blue vest underneath and accessorised with my DIY flower lapel pin and wool bowtie (Zara) while wearing my now favourite loafers.

Overall it was a fun and memorable night, I wouldn't mind watching it again! 😊

The world's favourite Nanny with be on the stage at the Dubai Opera from today until the 25th of May.

Don't miss it! You'll definitely love it!

Always have fun!
